2019 Arab Women of the Year Award winners announced

The fifth annual Arab Women of the Year awards successfully celebrated the achievements and excellence of Arab women from around the world last week. Held at the Langham Hotel, London, the event recognised outstanding Arab women who have made their mark on the international stage and contributed immeasurably to public life.

‘These awards were created in 2014 as a platform for us to show our deepest appreciations for Arab women who have done so much as leaders, role models and sources of inspiration,’ said CEO of London Arabia, Omar Bdour.

‘The Arab Women of the Year awards are an example of how our communities can come together, despite our differences, and recognise an astonishing group of women, whose tireless work gives young Arabs fantastic examples to live by.’

The award winners were:

  • HE Mariam AlAqeel, Achievement in Economic Development & Leadership
  • Raya Abirached, Achievement in Television
  • HE Rym Abdulla Al Falasy, Achievement in Family Support
  • Ons Jabeur, Achievement in Sport
  • HH Dania Al Saud, Achievement in Special Needs Education
  • Lujaina Darwish, Achievement in Business
  • Ahdeya Ahmed, Achievement in Journalism
  • Ayoub Sisters, Achievement in Cultural Exchange
  • Rana Husseini, Achievement in Social Impact
  • Abolish Article 153, Campaign for Social Change

Professor Geoff Smith, Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive of Regent’s University London, said: ‘We’re proud to recognise the achievements of these outstanding Arab women, who are all pushing for innovation, change and progress in their different fields.

‘This event comes at a timely moment in the global push for equality. While there’s still much work to be done, the contributions these leaders have made are inspirational – and they’ll continue to be role models for generations to come.’

Sue Shutter, Pro Vice-Chancellor of Human Resources, added: ‘Despite many challenges, Arab female entrepreneurs are finding new and creative ways to overcome barriers to entering the workforce and starting their own businesses.

‘The struggles faced creates resilience that makes these women great leaders in their field.

'We are here to celebrate the achievements of Arab women who deserve to be recognised for their contributions, who are breaking down gender barriers and pushing through glass ceilings. You are pioneers and truly inspiring others to aim to achieve goals that, in the past, were thought of as impossible dreams. You are role models for others and future generations.’

The 2019 London Arabia Arab Women of the Year awards were supported by Regent’s University London, Bicester Village, the Fast Building Contracting Company, and the London Arabia Association.
