Core modules

MSc Managing Digital Disruption and Transformation

Module title
Leadership and Transformation in the Digital Era   Digital transformation involves more than just technology: it takes leadership, too. In this module, you will explore various theories and models of leadership in the context of a fast-changing digital era, by examining transformational leadership in a variety of sectors. You will learn to adopt a people-first and digital-first approach to managing change and leading technological transformation. Drawing on various case studies and live business situations, you will explore and investigate the process of transformation, change and change management. You will also learn how to develop a compelling case for change that enables employees to feel motivated and engaged. Upon successful completion of this module, you will be ready to become a transformational leader who is capable of influencing others, inspiring positive transformation, and driving organisational change in the digital era.
Managing Through the Technology Lens To thrive in the era of technology, companies must undergo two distinct digital transformations. First, they must become digitised by incorporating digital technology into their core operations. Second, they must also consider opportunities for developing digital offerings to drive value and remain competitively relevant. As a leader, this can pose significant challenges. In this module, you will learn how to transform the company culture into one that is agile and innovative. You will explore the fundamentals of innovative thinking and how to compel collaborators across the organisation to embrace risk-taking and innovation across all operations and business functions. You will dynamically examine the technologies that are the pillars of digital transformation, analysing and understanding their impact, whilst putting theory into practice and learning how to recognise the opportunities that emerging technologies can offer as they continue to evolve.
Strategic Implementation of (Emergent) Technology Driven by constantly changing customer expectations and fuelled by an intense innovation cycle, our world is experiencing a fast-paced transformation fundamentally redefining business models in every sector and in every industry. In this module, you will learn the fundamentals of strategy and strategic decision-making in the current era of technology. You will apply business case techniques and frameworks to strategically reflect on the potential impact of technologies whilst exploring how to manage large scale business transformations enabled by those technologies in a risk-controlled environment. By completing this module, you will gain a solid understanding of a roadmap or a life cycle of digital transformation, ranging from strategy to execution. You will acquire practical knowledge and skills to apply concepts, frameworks and methodologies to effectively plan and execute transformation. You will also be able to identify and mitigate key risks and dependencies in the process of transformation.
The Future of Business Innovation Technologies This module provides an overview of how emerging technologies can enable businesses to evolve and grow through innovation, in order to secure future success. Technological advancements are impacting every aspect of how we live, work, communicate and socialise. You will learn how these technologies work together to envision unique solutions that seamlessly link the real world to digital platforms. From creating digital experiences using virtual and augmented content, securing the supply chain, authenticating, and rewarding, to utilising real time dynamic insights to analyse customer behaviour, you will explore the opportunities emerging technologies provide, and learn how they are poised to disrupt and innovate. In an experiential way, you will review applications such as Artificial Intelligence, the Internet of Things (IoT) and virtual and augmented reality and explore how they’re used and the skills needed to extract maximum value. In all, you’ll learn how to successful deliver digital transformation and global creative leadership on a global stage.
Professional Perspectives In this module, you will define and develop your professional identity and build your career objectives. You will explore the skills you need to succeed in contemporary workplaces, including large organisations and start-ups. You will explore professional communications, managing projects, collaboration, entrepreneurial and creative thinking, active personal and professional reflection and development. You’ll also learn strategies for how to plan your career, aware that concepts of work will become increasingly more fluid as time goes on.
Masters’ Perspectives This module will develop your advanced academic skills as you grow as an independent thinker and researcher. Through the distinct lens of your subject field, you will explore advanced critical thinking and analytical skills, and develop your ability to communicate complex ideas, develop research questions and plan to reach ambitious objectives with maximum impact and clarity.
Final Major Project The Final Major Project is the culmination of your masters course. You will integrate and apply the knowledge, experiences and thinking you have developed in your course to a project that you conceive and design. Your project should ideally be focused on your next professional steps – it can form part of your portfolio as you move towards work, further study or setting up a new business. It may be based on conducting research, solving a practical problem, or creating an artefact – or it may be a combination of all three. Whichever approach you choose, you will critically record and reflect on your intellectual, creative and investigative processes in detail. While you’ll have the support of your course tutors and an academic supervisor, as a Postgraduate student you’ll be expected to develop and prove your ability to operate independently in both academic and professional settings.
