Terry Newman

Professional Biography

Terry worked in industry for over 15 years as a fashion journalist and stylist and now writes about fashion, art, and culture. Books include Legendary Authors and the Clothes they Wore and Legendary Artists and the Clothes they Wore published by Harper Collins, both have been sold around the world and translated and published in China.

Most recently, she has written a series of best-selling fashion biographies which began with Harry Styles, and the Clothes he Wears - a survey of Styles’ wardrobe with a fashion history twist. Subsequently she has written books with a similar lens about Rihanna, Billie Eilish, Taylor Swift and Beyonce. She worked as a consultant on the Mary Quant and Twiggy fashion documentaries and is currently writing more books.  

Back in the 1990s, Terry was employed as Shopping Editor at i-D magazine, Associate Editor at Self Service, Consumer Editor at Attitude, and a TV presenter for Channel 4 fashion programmes She's Gotta Have It and Slave. Her journalism has been published in The Guardian, The Saturday and Sunday Times, Time-Out, The Big Issue, The Independent and Viewpoint and others.

Research Interests

Terry is interested in the character of fashion, what people wear and what it can tell us about lives led, popular culture, art, social dynamics, style histories and politics. 

Research Supervision

Terry is currently supervising FSM710 MA dissertations at Regents.

Teaching

Terry currently leads FSM705 and FSM710 modules for the International Fashion Marketing MA programme at Regent's.

For the last 14 years she has worked in a variety of university roles, including running the MA Fashion Journalism course at UCA for five years. Terry has led and taught marketing and branding modules, fashion history, magazine journalism, digital media, styling, and magazine publishing modules amongst others.

Previously, she lectured for 6 years at Birkbeck College, London University on their Creative and Professional Writing course.
