2018 Arab Women of the Year Award winners announced

The annual Arab Women of the Year awards successfully celebrated the achievements and excellence of Arab women from around the world on Thursday night.

Held at the Jumeirah Carlton Tower Hotel, London, the event recognised outstanding Arab women who have made their mark on the international stage and contributed immeasurably to public life.

“These awards were created in 2014 as a platform for us to show our deepest appreciations for Arab women who have done so much as leaders, role models and inspirations,” said CEO of London Arabia, Omar Bdour.

“The Arab Women of the Year awards have been a shining example of how our communities can come together, despite our differences, and recognise the laudable feats of Arab women.”

The award winners were:

  • Lifetime Achievement Award – Souad Abdullah
  • Achievement in Global Leadership in Cancer Control – HRH The Princess Dina Mired
  • Achievement in Media – Baria Alamuddin
  • Achievement in Business – Khalida Azbane
  • Achievement in Television – Lojain Omran
  • Achievement in Social Development – Dr Sharifa Al Yahyai
  • Achievement in Literature – Al-Aqeel
  • Achievement in Health Awareness – Dr. Naeema Hassan Al-Gasseer
  • Achievement in Cultural Exchange – Dana Al Fardan
  • Achievement in Sport – Sarah Essam
  • Youth Achievement Award – Bana Alabed

Professor Aldwyn Cooper, Vice Chancellor of Regent’s University London, said:
“The last year has seen an increasing focus on the role of women in society all across the world. We have continued to see social change in Arab countries, led and supported by the country leaders, to move from the dominance of men through to the substantial growth of input from women from many countries and many different backgrounds.

“We are here to celebrate the achievements of more Arab women who should be recognised for their contributions and who are role models for others and for generations to come.

“This event seeks to recognise the tremendous contributions being made by women in the Arab world as they take on new leadership roles.”

Sue Shutter, Pro Vice Chancellor of Human Resources, added: “Despite many challenges, Arab female entrepreneurs are finding new and creative ways to overcome barriers to entering the workforce and starting their own businesses.

“The struggles faced creates resilience that makes these women great leaders in their field.

“We are here to celebrate the achievements of Arab women who deserve to be recognised for their contributions, who are breaking down gender barriers and pushing through glass ceilings.

“You are pioneers and truly inspiring other to aim to achieve goals that, in the past, were thought dreams and not possible. These women are role models for others and generations to come.”

The 2018 London Arabia Arab Women of the Year awards were supported by Regent’s University London, Bicester Village, La Vallee Village, London and Partners and the Arab British Association.
