The 2025 BAFTA and IFTA (Irish Film and Television Academy) awards were announced in ceremonies over the weekend, and it was fantastic to see a Regent’s graduate and staff member amongst the winners!

BA Screenwriting and Producing graduate and Technical Demonstrator for the Film and Media Department Luis Garcia is Associate Producer on Irish language film Kneecap, which received a BAFTA in the Outstanding Debut. Kneecap also took home an impressive four IFTA Awards, including the prize for Best Director.

Luis said: ‘When the Kneecap script came across my desk, I knew it was going to be good, but it went way beyond my expectations. As a filmmaker, you always aspire to work on films that receive some recognition, so to have Kneecap nominated for and then win a BAFTA is amazing’.

Continuing the impressive level of success for Regent’s Film and Media alumni across the industry, we are thrilled to see that BA (Hons) Film and Screen Production graduate Abigail Matheson has been shortlisted in three categories for the Royal Television Society Student Awards for her 2024 graduation film Walking with Water.

Abigail said: ‘I will always be beyond thankful for my time at Regent's for building me into the filmmaker I am today. Their unwavering support and belief in my abilities gave me the confidence and platform to reach beyond my self-perceived limitations.’

Looking ahead to next month’s Oscars, everyone in the Regent’s community is keeping their fingers crossed for Screenwriting and Producing lecturer Line Langebek, as screenwriter on the Danish feature film The Girl with The Needle which is nominated in the Best International Feature Category.

On being nominated, Line said: ‘I’m thrilled to be recognised in this way alongside so many renowned global filmmakers and screenwriters. I’m so proud of everything The Girl with The Needle has achieved and to be heading to Los Angeles for the Oscars as the next step in the film’s journey is just incredible.’

Director of Content for the Film and Screen Production and Screenwriting and Producing courses, Mike Peel said: ‘Luis, Abigail and Line’s extraordinary achievements are testimony to the incredibly high bar we set for ourselves and for our students here at Regent’s.

Students on our Film and Screen Production and Screenwriting and Producing courses are being taught at a world class level and to see work by our graduates and staff feature so significantly in the 2025 award season winners and nominees is undoubtedly a reflection of this.’

The 2025 Oscars will be announced at an awards ceremony on Sunday 2 March.
