Alumni Profile: Nicole Housni Daza

Alumna Nicole Housni Daza , who graduated from Regent's having studied BA History, is now working as a visiting lecturer and teacher.

What are you working on at the moment?

I am currently a visiting lecturer for Banco de la Republica. Sometimes people ask me for private lessons or lectures.

Tell us about your journey from graduation to where you are now.

I started at the family's company from the very first day I returned to Colombia and started to make public my research and degree among local writers and cultural authorities. I had my first conference in October 2017 with other experts on subjects about the Caribbean from universities such as la Universidad Nacional (Colombia), Universidad Nacional de México (México) and Universidad del Norte (Colombia). The subject was the same as my thesis: Providence Island Company and Colony: a story of religion, commerce, slavery and conflict. In December 2017 I talked about the history of female pirates.

What are your plans for the future?

My plans for the future are that I'll go to Italy in February next year to learn Italian as I think knowing more than two languages is important and during that time I'll apply for MA programmes.

How did your studies at Regent’s impact on you professionally and/or personally?

My studies at Regent's had impact on a personal level as I feel they taught me the foundations for my professional career and adult life. I started out being a 17-year-old and graduated as a 21-year-old. The university and staff saw me grow up from a child to an adult.

What is your funniest/fondest/best memory of Regent’s?

My fondest memories are those of some specific classes such a Catherine Davidson's poetry writing which helped me grow as a person, George Yeats and his enthusiasm for Shakespeare. Never a dull moment in his classes. Nick Holder's great personality and his enthusiasm for teaching. Same as with the late Lady Sophie Laws.

What advice would you give to recent graduates starting out in their careers?

I would advise the recent graduates to never give up and take the opportunities. Experience is good to build a CV and their character too.
