Recent graduates, from BA (Hons) Film & Screen at Regent's, have just showcased their films at the Aesthetica Short Film Festival.
The festival is an international, BAFTA-qualifying short film festival, that takes place annually in November in the city of York. Returning this year as in person event, for the first time since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the festival celebrates independent film from around the world.
This year, some recent Regent’s graduates were selected to showcase their work from their final year projects. This opportunity gave the graduates a chance to demonstrate their skills and ideas to the industry, and gave them a platform to display their work very early on into their careers.
Lecturer on Regent’s Film & Screen courses, Ted Wilkes, commented: 'It was wonderful to be able to take our Regent’s graduates to the Aesthetica Short Film Festival for their ‘New Wave’ Showcase. It was great to see their work on the big screen at such a big festival and as good as their work is, we know the best is yet to come from them.’
Regent’s alumna Lucia Debernardini, who recently completed her BA Film and Screen degree at Regent’s, said: ‘Directing and producing a film during the pandemic was both an emotionally and physically challenging process. However, I had so much support and help from my tutors, classmates, and Regent’s, that I was able to end up with a film that I’m really proud of.
‘Seeing it showcased at the Aesthetica Short Film Festival, alongside the tutors and friends who helped make the film a reality was extremely exciting and rewarding and I feel very grateful.'
BA Film & Screen student Stefan Benjamin Pouilly, who also attended the festival this year, commented: ‘Attending the Aesthetica Film Festival was an amazing experience! Not only were we able to see student films, but also films made by young industry professionals -- giving us a great target for which to aim when creating our final-year short films.’
