Regent’s professor appointed as a judge for international university business competition

Eric Chan

Dr Eric Chan, the co-founder of the first Cesim Elite competition and Assistant Professor of Strategic Management and Leadership Practice at Regent’s University London, was invited to be a judge for the international Cesim Elite 2021 business competition.

He joined a panel of four international judges, including Michaela Ramm-Schmidt, Managing Director of Baltic Sea Action Group in Finland, Paulami Mitra from IÉSEG School of Management in France, and Veijo Kyosti, CEO of Cesim in Finland.

The competition took place from 1-6 June 2021 with 18 teams from 16 different universities across the globe competing to showcase their business skills and represent their institution. For the competition, the finalists had to create a 5-minute video, presenting their solution to a business case question.

The teams were tasked with explaining how they would transform a high-volume, fast-fashion company into one that provides higher quality, sustainable clothing with a circular economy business model. Each team was judged on organisation, presentation, overall video quality, analysis, subject knowledge, teamwork, and use of time.

On his experience as a judge for the 2021 competition, Eric said: ‘I am delighted to have witnessed the high level of commitment, creativity, teamwork and fun being demonstrated by the teams. It was good to see them effectively collaborate to create and develop their business cases. Equally, it was great to see a joint commitment to expand this experiential business exercise through small support networks comprised of teams, mentors, and organisers. All teams were gracious, humble and represented their countries and institutions with pride.’

Further to his experience as a judge, Eric is a facilitator of Cesim business simulation exercises, which he uses as part of his teaching and training. With over 23 years of experience in strategic simulation and coaching, Eric is driven to develop business leadership talent and encourages university students to compete in the 2022 Cesim competition.

He continues: ‘The competition is about self-discovery and appreciation of being able to collaborate in teams by reinforcing, applying, practicing and have fun to enhance learning, knowledge, and understanding. It’s a great opportunity to learn and develop business skills.’

At Regent’s University London, Dr Eric Chan is the Course Leader for the MA Management with pathways programme and the Programme Director of the Chartered Management Institute, with dual accreditation award Level 7 (PG) programmes. The modules that he teaches include Managing Complexity, Strategic Management of a Luxury Business, Strategy and Decision Making, Strategic Management, and Coaching.
