Regent’s Professor explores the global impact of COVID-19 on mental health

Jo Lusher

The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted people on a worldwide scale. Regent’s Psychology Professor, Joanne Lusher, is currently conducting a survey into the physical and mental effects of the pandemic on UK adults.

The survey forms part of the Mental Health and Wellness Study Group’s research into the mental health implications of COVID-19 globally. Survey data is currently being collected from adults across 150 different countries, and the team has so far recruited over 20,000 participants.

The survey aims to:

  • Determine the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on the financial, medical, and social welfare of adults.

  • Determine the mental health status of adults during the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • Determine the differences in the mental health status of different adult populations during the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • Identify the financial, medical, and social factors associated with the mental health status of adults during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Professor Lusher’s most recent collaboration looked at the impact of COVID-19 on Nigerian residents. The study, entitled: ‘Factors Associated with Financial Security, Food Security and Quality of Daily Lives of Residents in Nigeria during the First Wave of the COVID-19 Pandemic’ was published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health. You can read it here.

Professor Lusher said she was motivated to join the Mental Health and Wellness Study Group because: ‘It presented an opportunity to join a collaborative and multidisciplinary team of experts from around the world, to work on a highly topical and relevant field of study: mental health and wellbeing during COVID-19.’

As a Registered Health Psychologist, Professor Lusher has a keen interest in the relationships between physical and mental health. She joined Regent’s University London in September 2021 as Director (People). Joanne is responsible for providing cross-disciplinary leadership, management, mentoring and coaching to deliver on the University’s purpose of developing tomorrow’s global leaders. As well as teaching Psychology at Regent's, Professor Lusher also supervises Undergraduate, Postgraduate, and Doctoral research.

The long-term implications of COVID-19 on the mental health and wellbeing of UK adults is still unknown. You are invited to complete this online survey which aims to address this.
