Two of Regent’s staff members, and alumni, nominated for 2025 Oscar consideration

Regent’s Screenwriting and Producing alumnus and current Media Technical Demonstrator on the University’s film courses, Luis Garcia is Associate Producer on Irish language film Kneecap which has been nominated by Ireland for the international feature film category for the 2025 Academy Awards.

Regent’s Screenwriting and Producing lecturer, Line Langebek is writer on Danish feature film The Girl With the Needle which has been nominated by Denmark for the Academy Awards in the same category by Denmark.

Kneecap is a ‘fiercely original’ biopic about a real life Irish hip-hop group that the Irish Academy describe as ‘a brilliantly creative powerhouse of a film, with is bold and fearless storytelling and its boisterous screen performances’. It has already won the audience award at the Sundance Film Festival and three major awards at the Galway Film Fleadh.

The Girl With the Needle is described by The Guardian as ‘a grippingly acted arthouse-exploitation picture with a truly hellish theme’ telling the story of a serial killer operating in Copenhagen in 1919. The film was selected for official competition at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

Mike Peel, Director of Content for the Film and Screen Production and Screenwriting and Producing degree courses says, ‘to have a feature film funded and go into production is a minor miracle, to have that film be well received is a miracle upon a miracle, for that film to be chosen ahead of all the other films made in that country that year to be submitted for Oscar consideration is absolutely remarkable and testament to the incredible team we have here at Regent’s.

Kneecap is currently on general release.
