Studying business in the UK: your checklist

Studying in the UK: Your university checklist

Thinking about studying business in the UK? With the country beginning to open back up, there’s never been a more exciting time to take on a new challenge in the world’s business hub.

Location, location, location

The UK is a big place and where you study could really shape your opportunities. Are you someone who prefers a big buzzing city like London, where you’ll have plenty of opportunities to take on internships in business hubs like Canary Wharf and entrepreneurial Old Street – not to mention the history, culture and landmarks you can explore after class?

Or would you feel more comfortable in a regional location? Perhaps closer to the countryside, or nearer the coast? No matter what your lifestyle, there’ll be a university in a location that suits you.

Check your course content

Start thinking about what you want to study – there are so many options, ranging from broad business degrees that teach you the essentials, to degrees that delve deep into specific areas of business – from finance and investment to marketing and leadership. You’ll spend three years studying, so it’s important to make sure you’re happy with your choice.

Discover your career goals

Think about your reasons for studying business: do you see yourself leading the C-suite, or pitching to investors for your very own start-up? Choose a course and a university that matches your strengths and aspirations, as well as one that offers a thriving careers department and links to your dream industry – something that could open doors for you, even before you graduate.

Your dream university size

Some students are happy being one of thousands – but others prefer a more personal, 1:1 approach to their classes. If you’re someone who learns well in a smaller group, and you like knowing your tutors and classmates by name, look for a university where you won’t just be another face in the crowd.

The support you’ll receive

Starting university is an exciting time, but it’s normal to feel nervous. You may have concerns about coping with work, making friends or living independently. Make sure to have a good look at the support you’ll receive, both in class and on campus. Does the university offer personal, 24/7 support or will you be lost in the crowd? Feeling comfortable and supported is vital when living away from home.

University life doesn't solely revolve around lectures and tutorials. It’s also a great way to make friends, discover new hobbies and get involved with student life. Whether you’re planning on sticking with your course mates, creating your own society or joining the Student Union to make your voice heard, it’s so important to choose a university that speaks to you – when you know, you know.
