Regent's alumnus Makhdoom Fakhar Zaman has been elected as Chairman of Pakistan’s Matiari District, making him – at 25 – the youngest ever district council chairman in the country’s history.
The Global Business Management graduate took his oath as Chairman – a post comparable to the position of mayor in the UK – in August of this year. Each district comprises several cities, towns and villages, and Makhdoom’s responsibilities will include healthcare, education, social welfare, planning and housing, and rural development.
Since graduating from Regent’s two years ago, Makhdoom returned to Pakistan, where he joined the Pakistan People’s Party and began carrying out community and social work in his district. He was then chosen to lead the district’s electoral campaign, and, in November of last year, his party won a majority of 26 seats out of a total of 30. Elections for the party’s Chairman followed in 2016, and Makhdoom was the unopposed winner.
Makhdoom hopes to build "a strong foundation of education for my district; our children have a lot of potential and I want to create an opportunity for them to recognise their dreams. I would also like to improve our healthcare and maintain standards set by the World Health Organization."
Commenting on his time at Regent’s, Makhdoom said that the University “played a vital role in building my character. It gave me the vision to do something to help the progression and prosperity of my people. It has been an honour to be a part of Regent’s alumni community.”
