Nineteen final year Interior Design BA (Hons) students at Regent’s University London have impressed with their plans for a redesign of the University’s reception area at its Park Campus.
The Welcome Area project was set up as a design competition in partnership with the University’s Estates Department for Regent’s students as part of their six-week interior design module.
Speaking at the Awards evening for the students’ final designs, held in Regent’s Knapp Gallery, Head of Programmes for Fashion and Design, Mark Gower, said:
“We are seeing our students developing their skills through numerous live projects with an undying sense of enquiry and experimentation.
“Working closely with Head of Estates Alan Donnachie, our students have become the authors of their own learning environment.”
Vice Chancellor Professor Aldwyn Cooper announced the winner of the competition as Odin Dolmark for his ‘Loggia’ concept. There were also special commendations from the judges for students Melanie Nohra, Nourah Altuwaijri and Emma Macleod.
Odin’s prize for winning the competition is to be mentored for a year by Michael Delaney, Design Director at YOO and one of the competition judges.
Michael commented: “The winning scheme by Odin Dolmark created a deceptively simple, yet thoroughly elegant solution - a sequence of functional spaces flow together, each with their own atmosphere and character, culminating in a unique framed view of the magnificent quad.
“From inside, the beautiful interior is crafted from noble materials, while outside Odin has effectively reinvented the building for the 21st century.”
Odin added: “Winning the competition has improved my self-belief in being able to create great design solutions. I am truly amazed to win this project since I knew a lot of students also created beautiful interior solutions.”
The Welcome Area design exhibition is open to the public and will run at Regent’s University London’s Knapp Gallery until 26 March 2017.
